Why Film Maternity Photography Always Wins In An Increasingly AI World
In an era of instant gratification, one-click filters, and AI-generated "perfection," there is a quiet, powerful rebellion happening in the world of photography, and I've been taking part in it unknowingly for over a decade! Engaged couples, families, and expectant mothers are increasingly turning away from the hyper-polished look of digital sensors and toward the timeless, intentional art of film photography. While I've been shooting film intentionally for photography since 2014, it's become very trendy in the past few years especially in the wedding industry. I truly believe it has gained popularity as a rebellion to the AI tools that are taking over mainstream photography.
If you are planning a maternity session in the rolling hills of Ventura County or along the golden coastline of Santa Barbara, you might be wondering: Why choose film? In a world where software can now "create" a sunset or smooth skin into perfection, film offers something AI never can: Authenticity. As a documentary focused photographer, authentic photography has been my goal for years now. And now that AI is everywhere, I personally feel film is even more important to persue and promote. While I primarily tout the importance of film photography for weddings, maternity sessions are another genre where film photos just shine.
There is a profound sacredness to pregnancy, a fleeting chapter that feels both eternal and gone in the blink of an eye. This period is, by definition, a "liminal space"—a hazy, dreamlike threshold between who you were and the new life you are about to welcome. I've gone through three pregnancies and have felt each one was both so long, and somehow also so short. Because pregnancy already feels inherently cinematic and ethereal, it naturally marries well with film photography. Unlike the clinical precision of digital sensors, film honors the raw, organic reality of growing a human. The natural grain of film mimics the dreamlike quality of memory itself, lending a soft, nostalgic touch to your images that feels timeless rather than trendy.
Light as an Ingredient, Not an Algorithm
Film captures light as a physical and chemical reaction on silver halide crystals. It is an intensely analog, real process- completely devoid of computers or the internet. I've seen a lot of Millenials and Gen Z embracing other analog mediums for the same reason: the rise in popularity of VHS Tapes, vinyl records, and natural fiber clothing over fast fashion and streaming.
The Beauty of "Perfect Imperfection"
Digital photography and AI-assisted editing often chase a version of "perfection" that doesn't exist. Skin is blurred, colors are over-saturated, and the soul of the moment can be lost in the quest for flawlessness. Film photography embraces the grain. That organic texture adds a painterly quality to your images, making them feel like a piece of art rather than just a JPEG file on a hard drive. For a maternity session, this softness is incredibly flattering. It honors the natural beauty of your changing body without the "uncanny valley" feel of heavy digital manipulation.

With digital, it’s easy to take 2,000 photos and hope for the best (photographers call that "spray and pray"). With film, every frame is an intentional and calculated choice. Whether we are shooting amidst the rustic oaks of my home Ventura County or the pink sunset skies of Santa Barbara, the limited number of frames on a roll of film forces a slower, more intentional pace. This creates a relaxed environment for you to actually connect with your baby and your partner, rather than just performing for a rapid-fire shutter.
