Private Moorpark Estate Wedding in Ventura County, CA


Paige and Ian chose a wedding day that reflected what mattered most to them: family, intimacy, and meaningful connection while in California. They began their celebration with a private ceremony in Moorpark, California, surrounded only by their immediate family, including their parents and siblings. With the quiet support of their closest loved ones, they exchanged personal vows in a moment that felt simple and unhurried, with the Ventura County ranch lands and hills behind them.


Later that day, they opened up their celebration to include their extended family and friends, who joined them for an evening filled with dinner, dancing, and classic wedding reception formalities—from heartfelt toasts to a lively dance floor and cake cutting!


As their Moorpark wedding photographer, I had the joy of capturing each moment with both digital and 35mm film photography. I approach every wedding day with a dual-format mindset—film for its nostalgic, emotional texture and timeless tones, and digital for its clarity, precision, and flexibility in any lighting condition. This hybrid approach is central to my philosophy: to document your day in a way that feels both nostalgic, and modern. And since Ian is a film photographer and videographer himself, so I very much felt the pressure on delivering wedding photos that would be up to his standards!

Ventura County in Southern California is the perfect setting for a backyard or estate wedding, offering stunning views, warm weather year- round, and a peaceful agricultural atmosphere. Couples can take advantage of the region's beautiful year-round weather and greenery to create an outdoor wedding experience that feels both elegant and relaxed, using the natural California sunshine and scenery as their decor! Even into November and December couples can pretty reliably plan an outdoor wedding reception, with average temperatures in the 70's. Backyard weddings anytime of the year in Moorpark or Ventura County also allow couples to embrace their own familiar space while personalizing details to fit their unique style.


I love capturing the natural beauty of my home county in California. It's completely different than Los Angeles County or Orange County, which can feel hustle and bustle. In Ventura County we have sprawling estate properties, farmland, and many original ranches that were founded in the 1800s by Spanish settlers. Whether you're hosting an intimate wedding ceremony with only a few attendees, or a large guest count wedding reception, Moorpark and all of Ventura County can provide the ideal backdrop for your wedding day with avocado trees, palm trees, blueberry bushes and more as a beautiful part of your wedding photos. There are so many beautiful wedding venue properties in Ventura County, from Gerry Ranch with avocado trees, to Maravilla Gardens, to Ranch de las Palmas- where I got married in 2013! However, this post is focusing more on private wedding venues such as backyard weddings, or private rentals.


For couples who want to focus on meaningful moments, a backyard or estate wedding provides the ideal environment for an intimate ceremony. It doesn't have to be in Ventura County, the peace and simplicity of a backyard wedding can be anywhere in the world. Surrounded by those closest to you and the comfort of your home, couples can exchange vows in a setting that feels truly unique to them and no one else. The privacy of a home venue ensures that every aspect of the day can be tailored to the couple’s preferences without venue restrictions. There is more freedom to bring in your own wedding photographer, caterer or food truck, and other wedding vendors. If you don’t have a family or friend who can host your wedding, looking into an AirBNB or PeerSpace is a great option. Many AirBNB's offer beautiful outdoor spaces that can serve as the perfect venue for your big day. However, it’s essential to confirm that the property allows gatherings and events before booking due to licensing regulations and restrictions.


Moorpark ended up being the perfect backdrop for Ian and Paige’s celebration, and it’s a great example of why so many couples are searching for Moorpark wedding venues right now. The area has this quiet, wide-open charm — rolling hills, golden fields, open agricultural spaces, and those warm Southern California sunsets that make every photo feel cinematic. As a Moorpark wedding photographer, I love how easily couples can blend elegant details with a laid-back, outdoorsy vibe. Whether you're getting married at one of the local wedding venues like Walnut Grove at Tierra Rejada Farms, or a private estate, Moorpark offers the kind of natural scenery that lets candid moments really shine. Ian and Paige’s wedding had that effortless, romantic energy this area is known for, and it’s a reminder of why this little pocket of Ventura County is becoming such a sought-after spot for weddings.

Wedding Inspiration- Intimate Ceremony, Larger Reception


If you want your actual vows to be witnessed only by a select few but want others to come party with you later on, Paige and Ian had the great idea of having a family only wedding ceremony and then invited their extended family and friends to come and celebrate the night with them. It was a blend of a micro wedding in intimacy, but a larger party later on, where family could share toasts and speeches about the couple, old friends could connect and congratulate the pair, and everyone could dance! After the wedding ceremony, I took Paige and Ian to do romantic golden hour photos on both 35mm film and digital photography. When we finished, family and friends had started to gather for dinner and the wedding reception.


The wedding photos shown below are a mix of digital photography and 35mm film photography, which is my own personal brand as a wedding photographer. I believe that both have a unique quality and putting them together can make a beautiful representation of your once in a lifetime wedding celebration. I am a 35mm film photographer first, and digital photographer second. I truly believe in the analog quality of film photography and how it can completely change an image in terms of its warmth and grain. I supplement my film images with digital as it offers a layer of security that film photography unfortunately does not. Since I cannot see the result of the film images until they are developed and scanned, it is difficult to ascertain if the image has turned out properly. Because of this it's important to hire a professional wedding photographer who is comfortable with their film camera and trusts that they have properly exposed their images.

Dinner and Dancing Under the Stars in Ventura County


Backyard weddings in Moorpark, Ojai, Simi Valley, or anywhere in Southern California offer the perfect setting for an outdoor reception. Imagine dining with loved ones under the glow of twinkling lights and dancing the night away beneath the stars (even if you can't see them very well). The flexibility of a home venue, whether your own or rented from PeerSpace or AirBNB allows for unique layouts, such as long communal tables or a dance floor surrounded by lush gardens, making the evening feel different from standard wedding venues in the area.


Think about your personal style as a couple- do you love Moroccan flair, Boho vibes, or classic Italian architecture? Try to find an estate or rented space that already has the scenery and designs you love, that way the work you have to do to make the space reflect your personalities will be minimal.
