There are truly so many wedding venues in Santa Barbara County, and The Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara, nestled in the heart of downtown, is a venue that delivers on all fronts. Christina and Chris (truly a couple meant to be) chose this stunning location for their wedding ceremony and courtyard reception, crafting a day that had the classic elegance of a cathedral wedding, yet non-denominational. A Santa Barbara Landmark Building


The Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara is a magnificent example of Spanish Revival architecture, a signature style of the American Riviera and what Santa Barbara is famous for, along with its Mediterranean Climate. Built in 1930, this historic landmark offers an incredibly romantic atmosphere. Christina really envisioned having wedding photos in the chapel and pews, and we made that a priority.

  • Stained Glass Windows: The showstopper is undoubtedly the sanctuary's stunning stained-glass work, particularly the centerpiece Rose Window. The light pouring through these vibrant jewel-toned panels creates an ethereal, soft-focus glow that is every Santa Barbara wedding photographer’s dream. Film Wedding Photography in Low-Light


As a Santa Barbara wedding photographer whose bread and butter is film wedding photography, I approach every wedding with a blend of artistry and technical precision. The unique challenge and reward of shooting at the Unitarian Society lies in its magnificent, yet complex, lighting. The deeply saturated colors of the stained glass and the low light of the chapel are precisely the conditions where film truly shines, adding a distinctive grain and incredible depth of color that digital photography often struggles to replicate. Low-light film photography requires a precise understanding of exposure to capture the architectural detail and colors, and finding someone confident in using film as a medium is essential, since wedding photos cannot easily be replicated, and film cannot be immediately reviewed like digital photography.

Alice Keck Memorial Gardens


Following the wedding ceremony, we took a short walk across the street to one of Santa Barbara's most beloved and photogenic spots: The Alice Keck Park Memorial Garden. Located just steps from the Unitarian Society, this botanical haven is a favorite for Santa Barbara wedding portraits and a must-have location for my couples! I've done portraits in this garden several times and there's so much space to explore that the photos are always different. There are so many features that make this an amazing wedding photography or engagement photography spot.

  • Lush, Diverse Foliage: The garden features a stunning collection of over 75 different tree and plant species, including a gorgeous wisteria arbor, serene walking paths, and specialized low-water species. This botanical diversity means we can capture intimate and varied portraits without having to drive to multiple locations—a huge plus on a busy wedding day!
  • The Iconic Koi Pond and Gazebo: The tranquil koi pond and the picturesque gazebo provide classic, romantic backdrops. For Chris and Christina’s sunset session, the soft, golden light filtering through the trees at the garden made their portraits truly Californian.

After our trip to Alice Keck Memorial Gardens, the celebration shifted to the venue's charming courtyard, trading traditional formality for a fun, community-focused fiesta. Embracing a distinctly relaxed Santa Barbara vibe, Chris and Christina brought in a beloved local taco truck to cater the reception, providing guests with a casual feast under the California sky. The evening continued with family and friends sharing their stories and best wishes for the couple as they opened the floor to an "open mic" format, allowing many close friends and family to share spontaneous, loving toasts—a moment that emphasized strong community ties and showed how beloved these two really are. Guests left with a sweet memento: jars of homemade jam from the bride's mother, that Christina was kind enough to send me home with, and was absolutely delicious. They also decorated their sweetheart table with an amazing cat teapot that Christina said she found at a thrift store, and as a cat lady I loved it so much. The fun personal details are my favorite thing to find and photograph as a documentary focused photographer in Santa Barbara. A Nothing Bundt Cakes cake was cut, some spontaneous dancing broke out, and overall, the night was easy-going and perfect!
