A Cinematic Malibu Elopement: Editorial Film and Digital Inspiration on the Cliffs
There is a beautiful shift happening in the wedding world right now. More and more, couples are stepping away from the traditional, high-stress production and leaning into intimate, style-forward celebrations that prioritize presence over performance.
To bring this exact "anti-bride" philosophy to life, I teamed up with the incredibly talented wedding planner, Magical Events by Yami, for an editorial styled elopement on the cliffside of Malibu.
While this was a curated inspiration shoot, we wanted the energy to feel entirely real. We brought in Emily and CJ—a real married couple whose wedding I had documented just a few months prior. Because they already shared a genuine, deep connection, the day instantly transformed from a structured photo shoot into a relaxed, effortless celebration of their love. From the quiet cake cutting to the sunset champagne toast, every frame felt entirely unforced.
To top off an already unforgettable day, the couple even got matching tattoos of their actual wedding date in Roman numerals, beautifully inked right there on the cliffs by Chapter Two Tattoo.
The Editorial Elements: Curating the Vibe
Our goal for this Malibu styled content session was to showcase how a micro-wedding or elopement can feel completely laid-back while still looking incredibly chic, high-end, and intentional.
An Intimate Oceanside Picnic & Heart-Shaped Cake
Modern elopements are moving away from stuffy timelines and leaning into relaxed settings. We leaned into this trend by styling an elegant, low-profile picnic spread right on the coast. It’s the perfect inspiration for couples who want to slow down after their ceremony, share a private moment together, and maybe cut their wedding cake without a room full of eyes on them. A picnic spread like this could also be the perfect way to pop the question!
Direct Flash & Champagne Showers
As the sun dipped below the Pacific, we leaned into a high-energy, editorial aesthetic. Champagne towers are making a massive comeback, and while we didn't have a full guest list to pour for, Emily and CJ had the absolute best time popping a bottle and playing in the spray. These are the moments where my direct night flash photography shines—capturing those sharp, nostalgic, and brilliantly candid frames that feel like an exclusive after-party.
The Nostalgia of a Vintage Getaway Car
Nothing anchors a cinematic love story quite like a classic vehicle. Incorporating a vintage rental car into your elopement doesn’t just elevate the overall design; it serves as the ultimate interactive backdrop for those relaxed, unposed moments that feel straight out of a 90s romance film.
The Permanent Romance of a Wedding Date Tattoo
In this session, Emily and CJ celebrated their commitment by getting their real wedding date inked in fine-line Roman numerals right on the cliffs. Incorporating a mobile tattoo artist adds an incredibly fun, documentary-style element to the evening. From a photographer's perspective, capturing this body-altering moment and the raw, unscripted reactions under a direct night flash is the ultimate way to immortalize a couple who does things entirely on their own terms.
Why this Story Belongs on 35mm Film
An editorial day like this practically begs to be captured on analog media. I shot this session using a hybrid blend of digital and physical 35mm film formats, and the results are nothing short of magic.
Digital photography gives us those crisp, flawless, and clean frames, but true film captures the actual soul of a memory. The organic grain, the rich warmth, and the nostalgic imperfection of 35mm film are elements that cheap app filters and AI simply cannot replicate.
Whether you are planning a sprawling ranch wedding or a quiet cliffside elopement, blending film and digital ensures your day is preserved with both a modern edge and a timeless, heirloom quality.
