The Central California Coast is my happy place.
My husband and I were very young when we got married, and we didn't have the funds or time off school for a long or faraway honeymoon. We ended up taking our honeymoon to the Central Coast of California, visiting San Luis Obispo, Morro Bay, and Monterey. A few years later when we went back to visit our honeymoon spots, we found the town of Cambria and we have been hooked. Cambria is a small town "where the ocean meets the pines". There is a quiet atmosphere that is totally unbothered by being just a few hours away from busy California cities like Los Angeles. I feel so incredibly fortunate now in my career as a documentary wedding photographer to be brought back to Cambria time and time again for wedding celebrations, and I will always jump at the chance to be back in this special location.
For Cassie and Wrenn, Cambria was a destination wedding. They had visited the area on occasion before, and fell in love with the quiet coastal town the same as I did. So when they decided to host a very small and intimate wedding ceremony and reception with only their very closest family and friends, Cambria became the right choice. The venue they chose was the Pied Piper Ranch, link here. The ranch is known for hosting small intimate weddings, and with the spectacular views that the deck offers of the mountains and Pacific Ocean, it's no wonder why.
This intimate garden wedding was filled with plenty of family heirlooms and details that tied the couple's love story together- including the use of Cassie's grandma's jewelry, and cake topper. Other important details were handmade or DIY by the couple, such as Cassie's bouquet and all the centerpieces. Cassie and Wrenn got ready on site in the beautiful Cambria estate, and skipped a first look to go the more traditional route of seeing each other for the first time at the wedding ceremony.
A Wedding Ceremony Built on Simplicity
When your wedding guests have already been staying on site with you the past few days, an event like a wedding ceremony can happen so naturally. Yes, a formal invitation was sent, and the ceremony time was marked for 5pm. However, with a limited guest count and an easy atmosphere, a small delay in time is really no big deal at all. Having a small wedding like this one featured in Cambria really opens up the day to unfold naturally rather than stressing on making sure xyz is completed by a certain time.
This openness really allowed for the type of documentary photography that I specialize in to shine- where I can step back and focus on capturing the emotion between people who deeply love each other, and finding the small details that would otherwise may be missed in a chaotic guest count. Cassie and Wrenn chose these ancient trees to exchange their vows under, and the wedding ceremony was really just one small part of the whole day of magic.
After the ceremony we didn't need to rush to fill a strict cocktail houir with portraits, we were able to take our time around the property- allowing Cassie, Wrenn and their dog Cowboy to have a moment to breathe and really soak in the beautiful Central California mountains, before taking photos with their nearest and dearest. While we started our quick family formals, the catering staff set up in the estate kitchen starting to prepare Italian Food from nearby Luca's Deli and Wine. The chefs fed me as well in the ranch property dining area, and the family style dishes ended up complimenting the al fresco dining set up perfectly.

While Cassie and Wrenn crafted a day free from rigid expectations, they chose their remaining traditions with intentionality. Alongside heartfelt toasts over dinner, they preserved the wedding rituals of a first dance, parent dances, and a simple cake cutting—with their dog by their side. They intentionally bypassed performative formalities like bouquet tosses, garter removals, and staged exits. Every moment kept was chosen for one clear purpose: to foster real connection with their favorite people, completely free from fanfare or out of an obligation to "it's tradition".
